My solution for installing an Auto Dimming Mirror in a 2005 Volvo V50 (Indirectly S40)
Thank you for visiting my Page. Here are a couple other links...
Here is a guide to installing an Auto Dimming Mirror.
I looked hard to find a company that sold OEM mirrors for Volvo V50s and didn't have much luck.
The two I found were listed here on SwedeSpeed Forums by MrTippy.
"Gentex is supplying autodimming mirros to Volvo for the '05 s40 and V50. Mito is their authorized reseller.

Donnelly/Magna another large oem for mirrors is under contract to Ford/Volvo/Jaguar.

Their authorized resellers/distributors are:
The local Volvo dealer wanted $285.00 for the mirror plus installation. I ordered a mirror from Mito Corporation for $87.00. Their site allows you to choose your make, model and year of your car. When I got the mirror, the mounting bracket was not at all compatible with the Volvo. They sent me a new Chrysler mounting button and glue to be installed on the windshield. Since I have read some horror stories about trying to remove the original button and breaking the windshield, I decided I needed a new Dremel Tool.
I wanted to be sure that I could reassemble everything with the original parts. So, I did not alter any original Volvo parts in the process - except the plastic shroud behind the mirror.
Here is a diagram of what I did to the mounting bracket on the new mirror to work with the Volvo's mounting button.
The Volvo Mirror twists on its original mounting button just as it should. I did add a set screw to tighten the mount and eliminate a little play in the final mount position. The screw should be ground down to remove any sharp points. The hole into which the set screw is tightened must be at an angle in order to make sure it tightens against the metal of the windshield mounted button and NOT against the windshield.
The plastic shroud behind the mirror also needed some alteration. However, as I mentioned before, my intent was to be able to put the car back to its original condition. If necessary, all I will need to purchase is the little plastic parts that make up the two piece shroud.
Since the new mounting bracket was not made for this car, I also used an elastic band to secure the shroud in place. The Volvo mirror had slots into which the shroud would snap and remain against the windshield. The elastic bands are attached to those mounting tabs on the shroud and then stretched over the mirror post. Once the shroud is in place, none of that can be seen.
Here is a drawing of the console on the roof which must be removed to access the mirror mounts and the factory-installed power wires.
You can see the set screw in the hole of the shroud.
I hope this is helpful. If nothing else, it may help your decision about the Auto Dimming mirror.
